This displays a sheet of shapes with dashed lines. Students must imagine cutting out the shapes and folding them along the dashed lines. They must determine if one half of the shape would fit exactly on top of the other half.

This displays a sheet with photos of face painting patterns.

Students are asked which ones are symmetrical, and if they are not symmetrical, why not.

Cut up a photograph along a line of symmetry. The photo could be of a student’s face or it could be any other picture or sketch. Complete the picture/photograph.

This displays a sheet with shapes, some with rotational symmetry and some without.

There are letters beside each shape.

Students are asked to write down the letters which are next to the shapes with rotational symmetry and make a word from the letters.

You could take students to the car park to investigate the rotational symmetry of car steering wheels, hubcaps and logos.

Students could take photos of hubcaps and wheels, and bring them to school for discussion as a homework assignment.

They could be grouped into those that have rotational symmetry and those that don't. Those that do could be further divided depending on how many times they look the same as they turn through a full circle.
