These Mixed Tasks can be used once the chapters listed at the top of the task have been covered.

You could use them in a variety of ways

• As group work
• To extend individual pupils
• As a theme based topic which could be related to other subject areas – ideas are given in the individual notes below
• As a project for student’s to complete in a term or set time period

You could ask students to submit the work in a variety of ways

• As a report
• As a wall display
• As a class presentation
• As a booklet
• In some digital form

Upon completion of the project students could use one of the self assessment suggestions to evaluate their own work.

1. What will the weather be like?

This task could be done in conjunction with a study of how weather is formed or weather patterns in science.

2. Baking for charity

To incorporate integers into this unit, you could suggest students choose an amount they
want to raise and start with this as a negative amount on a “temperature type” scale.

As they make money for the charity, the line could move up.

This task could be integrated with food technology.

3. School obstacle course

You could set a time limit on making the obstacles to avoid this taking an excessive amount of time.

You could integrate this task with PE and ask students to write a training schedule for yourself to prepare for this event.

4. Flag it

You could ask students to include costs in their planning of the trip.

You could integrate this task with writing and ask students to write a persuasive piece for either keeping our current flag or changing it to your proposed new one.

5. Into the future

This task could turn into a drawing exercise. Encourage students to use their geometric knowledge and measurement knowledge to help with their designs.

6. How much electricity does your household use

Note that the electricity usage does not include hot water because there is not “formulaic” way of estimating this usage as it depends on the size of the tank, whether the pipes and tank are insulated, whether or not the customer is a plan where water only heats for certain hours of the day etc.

You could integrate this task with science and discuss electricity and power etc with the class.

7. Video making competition

Students should be encouraged to think about different ways to best divide the donated prizes fairly.

They could investigate tourist attractions in their region and collect data to display and analyse using the Enquiry cycle.

Local tourism attractions could be invited to get involved, helping with video production and providing information on how the costs involved in promotion.

You could integrate this task into social science, writing and art and design.

8. New school staircase

If your school or a nearby building is double storey or higher you could design a new stair case for this building and get the students to find how high the staircase needs to be using a clinometer. They could then work out from other stair case designs, how high and deep each step needs to be.

You could ask students to draw different designs and then vote on whose is the most practical.

You could integrate this task into technology.
