1.  Geoboard shapes

This link provides some tips on geoboards and how to use them.

This task can be used in many ways.

• You could run a competition to see who can draw each of the suggested groups in as many ways as possible.
• You could ask students to display all the ways they have made or drawn the shapes.
• Students could be asked to make up their own properties and then draw the shapes that satisfy those properties.

For some students you could limit the number of ways to, say, four ways.

This measures the perimeter and area of the shapes made.

Note: There is an app available for iphones and ipads. It is called Geoboard, by the Math Learning Centre.

Students are asked to use the geoboard to make the following on a 3 by 3 grid in as many different ways as possible:

triangles (scalene, equilateral, isosceles and right-angled)

squares         rectangles    

2.  Tangrams

This one includes a simpler four piece version you could choose for some students.

This link is not a tangram challenge but asks students to drag other shapes to make a given shape.
