- It is important for students to understand that each digit in a number stands for a particular value depending on the place of
the digit. - Begin to get students to understand that the value of a digit on a place value chart increases by ten times for each place moved
to the left, and decreases by ten times for each place moved to the right. - Showing numbers with equipment helps the understanding of place value.
Number Knowledge 2 – Reading and writing whole numbers
- Read and write numbers from 0 to 1 000 000.

Number Knowledge 3 – Nested place value
- Know how many tens, hundreds and thousands are in whole numbers altogether.

- It is important that students understand nested place value so they can rename numbers when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Nested place value underpins a lot of working with numbers.
- Working with materials is a very good way to help students understand this concept. Encourage students to do this until they are confident with nested place value.
Number Knowledge 4 – Addition and subtraction basic facts
- Know basic addition and subtraction facts to 20.
- Know complements to 20.
- Know doubles and halves to 100.

- Before students can calculate with larger numbers using mental and written methods, they need to be able to recall very quickly their basic addition and subtraction facts to 20.
- The activities in the student resource book and the further practice given here need to be supplemented with other basic facts practice. You could use the work in the student resource book to help you decide what further practice is needed.
