- Understanding how decimals and fractions with denominators of 10, 100, 1000 etc relate to each other is key to understanding decimals. Illustrating this with a variety of materials such as place value blocks, tens and hundreds frames, deci-pipes etc will help.
- Encourage understanding of this topic rather than rote learning of rules for how to convert between decimals and fractions.

- Nested place value underpins much of working with numbers. It is important that students understand nested place value so that they can rename numbers when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing large numbers or those with decimals
- Working with materials that have been clearly explained is a very good way to help students understand this concept. Encourage students to continue using materials until they are confident with nested place value.

- Round a decimal to the nearest whole number.

- Students must understand decimals and what they mean before attempting to compare them.
- Working with materials such as deci-mats or deci-pipes and diagrams helps with understanding of decimal comparisons.

- Know how to multiply and divide whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 where the answer might be a whole number or decimal.

- This topic goes hand in hand with an understanding of place value. It is important for students to understand that when a number is multiplied by 10, each digit moves one place to the left on the place value chart because each place to the left on a place value chart is tens times larger.
- It is important not to teach students to 'add a zero' when multiplying by 10 because this doesn’t work with decimal numbers or promote understanding of multiplying by 10 etc.
