Teacher notes
- Students often find fractions difficult. It is important that they understand what each number in a fraction means.
- Encourage students to understand that fractions where the numerator is smaller than the denominator are less than one whole.
- Working with materials such as fraction circles and fraction pieces helps students with their understanding.
- A fraction wall is an ideal tool to use to discuss fractions and how they make up wholes and also the relative size of fractions with different denominators.
- You might want to check that students understand the limitations of the model too. For example, whether they know that a missing row, (say sevenths on some fraction walls), or a wall that does not extend beyond twelfths, does not mean that these fractions do not exist. Students need to learn that a whole can be cut into an infinite number of equal pieces. They also need to know that there are many names for the same quantity so that they can make sense of equivalent fractions.
