Teacher notes
- It is important that students understand rounding in context rather than learn rules about it. A number line is the best way to show rounding because it is easier to see which ten, hundred or thousand the number is closer to.
- Students often have difficulty drawing number lines and placing the number on them. Give them lots of practice at this.
- You could help students to remember that when the number is five or more they round up by teaching “Five or more, let it soar, 4 or less let it rest.”
- Rounding is an important concept for students to master so that they can estimate and therefore determine whether an answer makes sense or not.
