The equals sign
This displays the Getting started on page 159.
You could have as many groups as you want having a race.
You could change the number to make it harder or easier depending on your group.
Equal me
at least four sets of number tiles from 1 to 20 and some +/– and = cards
These s display Printable Master pages of cards that you can print with numbers, +/– signs and equals signs.
Put students into three or four groups.
Deal the number tiles out to the groups.
Keep the operation and equals cards separate.
Ask one group to make up a calculation using at least two operations.
They can take the operation cards from the pile as they need them.
Example: 4 + 11 – 2 =
Have this group stand and hold up their cards.
The first group to make a calculation that is equal to that shown on the standing group’s cards is the winner and takes five points.
Example: A group might make
6 + 7
Ask this group to stand by the other group to make the equation.

Rules
play money ($10, $5, $1 coin) and a ten-sided die numbered 1 to 10.

This displays some rules, for example:
Amount paid = hours worked x 2 + $3
Sit students in pairs, Student A and Student B, and give them some play money.
Student A rolls the die. This is the number of hours worked. Student B uses the rule to work out how much Student A should be paid.
For the example given above, Student A could roll 4 for the number of hours worked. Student B’s calculation to work out the amount to pay would be 4 × 2 + 3 so they would give Student A $11.
Repeat for the other rules, then swap roles between who rolls the die and who calculates the amount paid.

This displays a game.
Divide the class into groups of about 4 students.

This displays 15 cards, each with a scenario for students to model with equations.
Deal the scenario cards out to the groups.
Give each group a set of number cards and a set of operation and equals cards.
Example: Bethany had 14 apples.
She gave some away.
She had 8 left.
Ask each group to make an equation for each scenario card and put the two together on their table.
14 - n = 8
You could get students to look at each other’s work to try to find any mistakes that could then be discussed.
This displays some printable strips with a number on one side that corresponds to its length, and n on the other side of it.
It also gives some equations to model using the strips.
Example: For the equation n + 8 = 17, put the strip for 8 above the strip for 17, then have the strip for 9 with the n showing. It will look like this.

Ask students what n stands for.
When the strip is turned over, 9 will show.
