Rich tasks

  • These are problem solving open-ended questions that require students to investigate division strategies. The tasks can be given at the start of a topic and done as the students gain enough knowledge to complete them, inserted into a topic at an appropriate place, or given as homework or extension.

Solving “How many sets of …?” problems

  • Understand why repeated subtraction and dividing into a number of sets are the same.
  • Solve “How many sets of ...?” problems by jumping back or forward along a number line or by using multiplication facts.

Dividing by sharing

  • Understand that when items are shared out equally, groups of equal size are made.
  • Solve dividing by sharing problems using arrays or multiplication.

Dividing using other strategies

  • Know that when solving division problems, as the number of sets or the number being put into each set halves, then the answer will double and " versa.
  • Understand that dividing by sharing and solving “How many sets of …?” problems can be solved using multiplication facts where one factor is unknown.
  • Know how to use basic facts to solve harder division problems.

  • Understand that not all “Sharing” or “How many sets of ...?” problems result in an exact number. There may be a remainder
