1.  Whose group should I join?

• Note that for some students there is more than one group that could be chosen and they just have to make an arbitrary choice that they must record accurately.
• Encourage students to draw a diagram and add each student to a group once they have decided which group is best for that student.
• Encourage students to work systematically.
• You could divide the class into groups and run a competition to see which group can find the answer first.
• You could change the number of students and the number of lollies in each bag to make the task harder or easier.

Suggestions are:

To make it easier, have 10 students altogether and 60 lollies in each bag (there will be 2 students in Hayden’s group who will get 30 lollies each, 3 in Chelsea’s who will get 40 lollies each and 5 in Isaac’s who will get 36 lollies each).

To make it harder, have 30 students altogether and 60 lollies in each bag (there will be 5 students in Haydon’s group who will get 12 lollies each, 10 students in Chelsea’s group who will get 9 lollies each and 15 students in Isaac’s group who will get 12 lollies each.)
