Finding a fraction of a set
This displays the Getting started on page 143.

You could laminate these.
Students are asked to share pieces of salami equally on the pizza. Use counters as the pieces of salami.
Students then have to complete the equation.

Tell students a scenario and give them the number of counters in the scenario.
Ask them to find the unit fraction and write an equation for it.
Then ask them to write the equation for the answer.
Example Billy had 12 stickers for his scooter.
He put ¾ of them on the front of the scooter.
How many did he put on the front?

Finding fractions of sets and regions
This displays six sets of five cards to put into groups of fractions that match.
Example:

Alternative You could ask groups of students to choose a fraction and show it in five different ways, drawing each way onto a separate card.
Shuffle the cards, give them out and ask students to form groups of the same fraction.
If you know the fraction, what is the total?
How many?
Use Printable Master – Fraction circles and put some counters on one section of one of the circles.
Ask students how many would be on the whole.
Write an equation each time.
