Adding using written methods (page 54)
Renaming numbers (Teacher Resource Sheet 12)
(This sheet could be used to revise renaming of numbers prior to the teaching on page 54.)
This displays some conventional expanded notation and expanded numbers where renaming has been used and asks students to match them to one single number.
Example - students have to match 400 + 150 + 15, 500 + 60 + 5 and 565 together.
You can use this activity with a smart board, or any interactive device such as a computer, laptop or tablet.

This displays the addition 234 + 387 and matches the written steps with place value materials.

Step by step shorthand addition (Teacher Resource Sheet 14)

This displays some additions such as 1879 + 3756 and gives the steps for the written method for you or students to fill in.
You will need to be able to display this sheet on an interactive device, such as a write-on surface, a smart board or a writeable pdf programme.
Subtracting using written methods (page 58)

This displays some subtractions and asks students to decide what the first number needs to be rewritten as, in order for the subtraction to be possible.
Example:
456 – 348 456 must be rewritten as 400 + 40 + 16
456 – 384 must be rewritten as 300 + 150 + 6
456 – 287 must be rewritten as 300 + 140 + 16
Discuss why the number needs to be partitioned differently for each subtraction.
