  • Recognise the rules that someone has used to solve a problem and be able to solve a similar problem in the same way.
  • Know the principles of the commutative, associative and distributive rules but not their names.
  • Explore and understand that the equals sign means that both sides are of equal value.
  • Be able to solve problems using understanding of equals without doing the calculations on both sides.

Using number strategies to solve equations - page 173

  • Use strip diagrams or a knowledge of equals and a family of facts to write more than one equation for a situation and use the most suitable one to find the value of the unknown.
  • Use a variety of mental strategies for adding, subtracting and multiplying to solve equations.
  • Write an equation to represent a situation and use a variety of numerical strategies to solve it.
