(This could be used to introduce the equals sign on page 170.)
This displays some calculations done by Max and asks how Max would do some other similar calculations.
This is a good way to revise some of the strategies used for addition, subtraction and
multiplication.
Balancing acts (Teacher Resource Sheet 77)
(This could be used to introduce, or in conjunction with, The equals signon page 170.)
This displays some scales and asks for the missing amount that is required to make them balance.
Make me equal (Teacher Resource Sheet 78)
(This could be used to introduce, or in conjunction with, the teaching box on subtraction on page 171).
This displays two pairs of number strips and asks students to write an addition and a subtraction equation to match each set.
Pegs
You could use pegs on a number line to illustrate how, when subtracting, the difference remains the same as long as you move the pegs by the same amount (add or subtract the same amount from each of the numbers being subtracted).
You can also use pegs on a number line to illustrate how, when adding two numbers, the same amount has to be taken from one number and added to the other to keep the total the same.
Using number strategies to solve equations (page 173)

(This could be used in conjunction with the teaching for using number strategies to solve equations on page 173.)
This displays the Getting started on page 167.
You could extend this by giving a similar problem with larger numbers such as this:
Two items for the school cost $472.
What might each be and how much might they have cost?
Strip diagrams (Teacher Resource Sheet 79)
(You could use this to illustrate the example on page 173 or just before the practical on page 174)
This displays some Cuisenaire rods representing strip diagrams and asks students to write all the possible equations they can think of for each one.
It's a problem (Teacher Resource Sheet 80)
(You could use this in conjunction with the example on page 175.)
This displays a problem and works through the steps to write an equation in several different ways:
using a strip diagram
using family of facts
and using knowledge of the equals sign.
Students then decide which one to use to find the value of the unknown.
