Chapter 8 | Fractions
Overview
Rich tasks
This is an open-ended activity that requires students to investigate how halves and quarters can be created. The task can be given at the start of a topic and done as the students gain enough understanding to complete it.
- What does it look like?

Fractions of shapes page 164
- Know the names and meaning of the top (numerator) and bottom (denominator) numbers in a fraction.
- Understand that a fraction is created when a whole is divided into equal pieces.
- Identify and name a fraction of a shape.

Fractions of sets page 168
- Understand that a fraction is created when one set is divided into smaller equal sets.
- Find and name a fraction of a set.

Finding whole sets from fractions of sets page 172
- Use the denominator to find out how many parts are in the whole.
- Know how to find the size of a set from a fraction of the set.

Ordering unit fractions page 174
- Students often over-generalize and apply what they know of whole numbers to fractions. This misconception is more easily identified when ordering unit fractions than non-unit fractions. For example, because 3 is more than 2, students may assume that 1/3 will also be bigger than ½.
- Avoid giving students a ‘rule’ to learn, instead encourage students to come to their own understanding through access to a variety of materials, for example area, length and sets of objects. They will develop a better appreciation that when an equivalent whole is divided into fewer parts the parts will be larger.
