• It is very helpful to use materials so that students realise why the number being subtracted or divided by is the same as the number of groups the quantity is shared between. For an example of how this could be done see the practical, ‘Sharing to divide’ on page 132 of the Student Resource Book.
  Record each round as a subtraction from the original group, e.g. 20 shared between 5 can be recorded as 20 – 5 – 5 – 5 – 5.

• Sharing can also be recorded on an array.

                        e.g.      Group 1: X X X X                    When 20 is shared

                                    Group 2: X X X X                    between 5, each group

                                    Group 3: X X X X                    receives 4.

                                    Group 4: X X X X                    20 ÷ 5 = 4

                                    Group 5: X X X X

• You may need to ask questions that encourage students to anticipate the number of shares that might be made from a group of objects before sharing. For example,
  “If I shared 15 grapes between 5 students,
  would they be able to get at least 2 each?”
  
  This approach encourages students to identify and use the facts they know rather than always sharing one at a time, which is very inefficient.
  So, for example, students may make a link to 5 + 5 = 10, and realise that one more share could be made with the remaining 5, so that each student gets 3 grapes.
