Finding the rule for a growing pattern (page 182)
At show (Teacher Resource Sheet 81)
(You could use this in conjunction with the teaching on page 182 and to introduce the idea that some patterns can be drawn in different ways and that there is more than one way of finding later terms in a pattern. It is a good example of being more efficient by using multiplicative thinking to work out later terms.)
This displays three ways of working out how to find the 15th term of a pattern and asks students to fill in the gaps.
It’s more unusual (Teacher Resource Sheet 82)
(This could be used to illustrate that not all patterns are linear. You could use it after Activity 1 on page 184. Data from these patterns could be entered into a spreadsheet package to generate a graph that is not linear.)
This shows some non-linear patterns. These might be used to discuss with your class how the pattern continues and then to decide the most efficient way to find the 10th term of the pattern.

(This sheet could be used after Activity 1 on page 184 to check that students understand growing patterns by demonstrating that they can draw their own if given a rule.)

This displays some screen shots from Excel, which can be helpful if this is the spreadsheet program that you use. It takes students through the example on page 188.

(This could be used in conjunction with Activity 2 on page 190 to show that not all graphs of patterns are straight lines.)

You could extend this by getting students to study one of the examples given in more detail.

(This could be used as an extension to Activity 2 on page 190.)
This displays some graphs of linear relationships and asks students to find the rule from the graph.

This gives some rules and asks students to write a number pattern using the rule.
