Understanding probability
Can it swim? (Getting started 18)
(You could use this sheet prior to beginning the chapter on page 291 of the Student Resource Book to initiate discussion about events at either end of the probability continuum.)
This displays the Getting started on page 291 of the Student Resource Book.
How certain are you? (Teacher Resource Sheet 74)
(You could use this sheet prior to Activity 1 on page 295 of the Student Resource Book.)
This asks students to create sentences about the probability of events shown in pictures.
- Give each student adequate time to create or record several sentences before encouraging them to share with a partner, small group or in class discussion. You could ask the listening students to indicate whether they agree or disagree with each statement and provide opportunity for each student to justify their position.
- Included on the sheet is a list of words which are used to describe the probability of an event.
- The vocabulary on the sheet could also be put on a continuum. This allows for discussion of the nuances of each word and its relationship to other words on the continuum.
More or less likely
Make a tower (Teacher Resource Sheet 75)
(You could use this sheet for discussion prior to the practical on page 298 of the Student Resource Book.)
This displays a sheet with a child making a tower of blocks. Questions are asked about which bag the child is likely, impossible, certain and equally likely to take a red block from.
- Students could create bags of blocks to test their predictions.
