Number knowledge 5 – Skip counting in ones, tens, hundreds and thousands
Play BUZZ
Students stand in a circle. You choose the starting number and the step to count in.
Go around the circle with each student saying the next number in the sequence. If a number is wrong, the rest of the group says “Buzz” and the student who made the mistake sits down. If you wish to keep all students engaged in the activity, you could have a counter system instead. Any student who says a wrong number takes a counter. When you stop the activity the student with the fewest counters is the winner.
Number knowledge 6 – Rounding to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand
Population explosion?
Find out the population of five cities and round them to the nearest 1000.
If you add up the actual population and the rounded populations, do you get more or fewer people?
