- Recall multiplication facts for 2s, 5s and 10s.

Teacher notes
- It is important that students have fluent and accurate recall of at least their 2s, 5s and 10s facts before the end of Level 2.
- Students will need opportunities to learn these facts, ensuring they recall them accurately, before practising to achieve automaticity. This is best done through learning groups of facts that relate to each other in manageable ‘chunks’.
- Students can use these relationships to ‘check’ facts they are unsure of. For example, using knowledge of doubles to check x 2 facts; place value to check x 10 facts; tens facts or the pattern of the number in the ones place (i.e. ending in either 0 or 5) to check x 5 facts.
- Students at Level 2 should be encouraged to use other facts, for example, repeated addition or known tables, rather than skip counting strategies for facts they cannot recall.
- Students may learn strategies to derive facts, but again the goal should be for students to work towards confident recall of all the facts to 10 x 10 as soon as they are able. Deriving should not be considered an alternative to knowing basic facts. - Students beginning Level 2 should be encouraged to use repeated addition or subtraction and multiplication facts (understanding that division is the inverse of multiplication), rather than skip-counting backwards for facts they cannot recall.
