Adding using place value partitioning
Partition one number (Teacher Resource Sheet 6)
(You could use these two sheets for further discussion following the teaching section on page 68 of the Student Resource Book.)
This shows a problem and starts solving it using place value partitioning. Students are asked what goes in the gaps?
- It is helpful if students are familiar with representing strategies in different ways. You could support students understanding of the quantities involved, by putting them in groups and asking them to model each jump on the number line with different place value equipment.
How much was spent? (Teacher Resource Sheet 7)
(You could use this activity for further discussion following the teaching section on page 68 of the Student Resource Book.)
This displays shows how place value partitioning can be used to find out how much money had been spent. Students are asked what goes in the gaps.
- You could use a Jigsaw approach and have half of your students explore how to fill in the gaps and half work out how the answer could be recorded on a number line. Students from each group could then be paired with a member of the other group, and share their explanation.
- Some students may find it easier to explain using place value materials rather than recording on a number line. Teachers could choose to make another group with these students and have them demonstrate each way with a range of place value materials.
Subtracting using place value partitioning
Subtracting by partitioning the second number (Teacher Resource Sheet 8)
(You could use this sheet after the teaching section strategies on page 72 of the Student Resource Book to encourage students to consider when to choose each of the ways to subtract using place value.)
This shows a subtraction by partitioning the second number, and asks students to show how to use two different sorts of place value materials to work out the answer and then fill in the gaps to record the answer on a number line and using an equation.
- It is helpful if students are familiar with representing strategies in different ways. You could put students in groups to decide how to model each way with different place value equipment and how to record their thinking.
Adding and subtracting using place value partitioning
A big day out (Teacher Resource Sheet 9)
(You could use this sheet after the teaching section strategies on page 74 of the Student Resource Book to help students consider when to choose each of the two subtraction strategies.)
This displays two sheets with one addition and one subtraction problem and asks students first to decide whether they should add or subtract, and then to fill in the missing numbers on number lines and equations to show their thinking.
- Students should be encouraged to try to solve each problem mentally and to record their thinking before being given an opportunity to discuss which way they found the easiest. Encourage students to explain why it seemed easier.
