This displays a sheet that asks students to work out the colours and shapes that will be above some given numbers.

• Ask students to identify the core pattern for the shapes and then the colours in each of the patterns. There is also a ‘repeating unit’ when both of these elements are looked at together, so ask students to identify that as well.
• Encourage students to use additive or multiplicative strategies to work out the answers. You could ask students, pairs or groups who are able to do this, to demonstrate how they worked out their answers to the rest of the group or class.
• This sheet could be extended by asking students the sequence of numbers that will be below, for example, the butterflies or the dark brown grubs etc.

This displays a sheet that asks students to say how much two patterns jump forward or back by, and what the missing numbers in each pattern are.

• This sheet could be used to discuss how number patterns are made. You could draw an arrow under each step so that students can see that the step is the same each time.
• You could ask students what the next three numbers in the pattern would be.

This displays a sheet that displays patterns with an equals sign. Ask students to continue each pattern and describe what is happening in each. How does knowing the pattern help to solve equations without calculating each one?

• You could also ask students what the previous line of the pattern would be.

• This is a good opportunity to observe what students already know about repeating and growing patterns and ensure that students are familiar with the concept of growing patterns.

This displays two cave patterns and asks students to say what the next two pictures will look like, what the missing numbers on a table are, and what the rule for continuing the pattern would be.
