•   Play triangles (Getting started 16)
  This link displays the Getting started on page 260.
  Students can play the game Triangles to familiarize themselves with triangles and as a bit of fun.

• What’s my name?
  • Ask a student to pick a 2-D shape and describe it without using the name of the shape. See if the any other student can correctly draw it and name it. Repeat until you have several of the quadrilaterals and polygons displayed. Discuss what students already know about the shapes.
  • You could ask one student to give the name of a shape and the others make it using string.
•   That’s my card (Teacher resource sheet 37)
  This link displays a set of cards with shapes and names of shapes. You can print them and cut them out.
  Use the descriptions/questions on the displayable sheet. For example:

• • • Show me a quadrilateral with four right angles and two pairs of equal sides.
    • Show me a shape with just two parallel sides.
    • I have six equal sides.
    • Show me a regular triangle. What is its name?
    • I am made of two isosceles triangles joined together, what shape am I?
    • Show me a shape with four equal sides but no right angles.
    • If you fold me in half you get a right-angled triangle, what shape am I?

Students whose cards match the description stand up as each description is displayed.

If they are correct they get to keep the card, otherwise it is given to the other group.

Teacher notes

• Using symmetry is a good way to help remember/work out the side and angle properties of the shapes.
