Chapter 15 | Symmetry and transformations
Overview & Teacher Resource Sheets
Rich tasks
- These are problem solving open-ended questions related to the transformations of reflection, rotation, translation and enlargement. The tasks can be used at any point in the chapter. They can be given at the start of a topic and done as the students gain enough knowledge to complete them, inserted into a topic at an appropriate place or given as homework or extension.

> More on "Rich tasks for this Chapter"...
Line symmetry
- Find lines of symmetry and state the order of line symmetry.
Rotational symmetry
- Recognise whether shapes have rotational symmetry and if so find the order.
> More on "Rotational symmetry"...
Rotation, translation and reflection
- Draw and answer questions about reflections, rotations and translation of objects.
- Recognise the invariant properties under reflection, rotation and translation. This is further developed in book 2.
> More on "Rotation, translation and reflection"...
Enlargement
- Find enlargements of objects
- Recognise the invariant properties under enlargement. This is further developed in book 2.
Recognising transformations in patterns
- Describe the transformations that have been used to create patterns.
> More on "Recognising transformations in patterns"...
Tessellations
- Create tessellations and determine which triangles and quadrilaterals tessellate, and why.
