Chapter 17 | Transformations
Teacher Resource Sheets
Enlargement (page 278)
Do I get bigger or smaller? (Teacher Resource Sheet 119)
(This activity could be used to introduce Enlargement on page 278.)
This displays a grid with a shape made from straight lines that you can display onto a writable surface like a whiteboard.
Students are asked to enlarge the shape by a scale factor of ½.
Ask individual students to come and draw the next line of the enlargement.
This activity serves to illustrate that every line on the original shape is made half as long in the image if the scale factor for an enlargement is 1/2.
If you would prefer not to display the grid to a group, you could ask the students to pair up to do this exercise.
Growing things
Buy some cheap 'grow in water' animals or figures.
Ask students to measure them before they 'grow' and then measure them again each hour (or at suitable time intervals).
The results could be graphed.
Students might be encouraged to work out by what scale factor the original shape has been enlarged, once the shape has stopped growing.
They could also measure how long it took to enlarge the figure by a scale factor of, for example, 2.
Drawing reflections (page 281)
Triangle reflections (Teacher Resource Sheet 120)
(This activity could be used in conjunction with Activity 2 on page 282.)
This displays some triangles and asks what shapes are made when the triangle is reflected in one of its sides. You can use this activity with a smart board, or any interactive device such as a computer, laptop or tablet.
Clock reflections (Teacher Resource Sheet 121)
(This activity could be used prior to Activity 2 page 282.)
This displays some reflections of clocks and asks students what the time is on each one.
I can’t read it!! (Teacher Resource Sheet 122)
(This activity could be used in conjunction with Drawing reflections on page 281 or to introduce this section.)
This displays some reflections of words that are commonly seen in a rear view mirror, such as the word AMBULANCE. Students are asked what the words say.
Reflections (Teacher Resource sheet 123)
(This sheet could be used in conjunction with the Challenge on page 283.)
This displays some photos that could help students with the Challenge on page 283.
Transformations (page 284)
Crafty (Getting started 17)
(This activity could be used as a starter to introduce and remind students about transformations and how they are used in craft.)
This displays the Getting started on page 275.
You could relate this to craft done at school or in the local community.
Patterns of the Pacific (Teacher Resource Sheet 124)
(This sheet could be used to introduce Transformations on page 284, and it shows how transformations are used in Maori and Pacific Island patterns)
This displays some Maori and Pacific Island patterns. Students are asked whether the patterns were made by translating, reflecting or rotating shapes.
How was I made? (Teacher Resource Sheet 125)
(This sheet could be used in conjunction with Transformations on page 284 or prior to Activity 3 on page 285.)
This displays a sheet with photos of knitted patterns.
Students are asked which transformation(s) were used to make the patterns.
Tessellations (page 288)
Pretty patterns (Teacher Resource Sheet 126)
(This sheet could be used in conjunction with or to introduce Tessellations on page 288.)
This displays a sheet with some interesting tessellations. Students are asked to identify the core shape being tessellated.
