1.  Make a tossing course – page 226 of the Student Resource Book

• This task could be given to a group.
• It is important that students approach this task with precision and take accurate measurements. Tell them that as the tossing course manager you will be checking that the course is accurate.
• This activity can be done inside by reducing the size of the objects (for example, ping pong ball, coin, bean bag), or the method used to move them (for example, flicking, blowing). In the case of some of these smaller objects, weighing might be difficult and this step could be left out.

2.  Drink up – page 227 of the Student Resource Book

• This activity requires students to know about time as well as capacity.
  Encourage students to measure accurately. Discuss with them how an amount can become very inaccurate if they estimate rather than measure, for example how much is drunk in a day. You could get them to repeat the task several times and see what difference this would make over a year.

• There are many real-life situations when people measure fluid intake and output to ensure adequate hydration and monitor health. Encourage students to think about real-life settings where measuring intake might be important. Some examples they might give could include during vigorous exercise such as marathons, checking for medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney failure.
  Some students might want to find out more about recommended fluid intakes or the symptoms of dehydration and report back to the class.
