3-D shapes (page 254)

Body shapes (Getting started 15)

(This sheet could be used as a starter to introduce 3-D shapes on page 254 and encourage students to see shapes in their environment.)

This displays Getting started on page 251.

 

You could introduce 3-D shape through PE and take students outside or into the hall or gym to give them more space. You could also allow students to use the edge of something in the room as one side of the shape to increase the number of shapes made.

What if we chop it? (Teacher Resource Sheet 110)

(This sheet could be used in conjunction with the teaching of cross sections on page 254.)

Some real-life shapes are shown and students are asked to identify their cross-sections.

What is my shape?

(This activity could be used at some point during the section Properties of 3-D shapes on page 255)

Pair students up and put a cardboard screen between them.

 

Get one student to make a shape with interlocking cubes and describe it to the other student. The other student must try to make the shape. They compare their shapes to see how similar they are.

Faces, Edges Vertices (Teacher Resource Sheet 111)

(This activity could be used to introduce the investigation Does the rule work? on page 257.)

This displays some photos of real-life shapes with a table for the number of faces, edges and vertices to be recorded. Students are asked to count them and complete the table.

 

For example, cereal box, clear prism, tissue box, cheese wedge, can of something, pyramid, etc.

 

Students are also asked to name the shapes.


Nets (page 258)

The net result (Teacher Resource Sheet 112)

(This sheet could be used as further practice for the Nets section on page 258.)

This displays a sheet with some nets of common 3-D shapes. Students are asked to predict how many faces, edges and vertices the 3-D shape will have when the net is folded.

 

Copies of the nets are provided for you to fold and check.

(This sheet could be used in conjunction with the teaching of Views on page 261.)

This shows different views of four houses and asks students to match them.
