Rotational symmetry (Teacher Resource Sheet 106)
(This sheet could be used to introduce rotational symmetry on page 242.)
This displays some pictures.
Use the pictures to discuss rotational symmetry as a class or group.
Symmetry in the room?
(This activity could be used to show how symmetry is present all around us, either at the beginning or end of the symmetry section.)
Pair students up and ask them to find (and if possible photograph) five objects or pictures etc in the room with line symmetry.
Do the same for rotational symmetry.
Get each pair of students to share what they found.
This activity could also be done outside the classroom, perhaps with a focus on symmetry in nature, for example leaves, flowers, insects and so on.
2-D shapes (page 245)
Making shapes (Getting started 14)
(This activity could be used to introduce the topic of 2-D shapes on page 245. It will help remind students of some shapes that are already familiar.)
This displays Getting started on page 239.
You could take students outside or into the hall or gym to give them more room to make shapes using their legs etc.
You could allow students to use an edge of something else as one side of the shapes to increase the number of shapes that can be made.
You could show this video to inspire students.

Shapes and properties (Teacher Resource Sheet 107)
(This sheet could be used to display in the classroom while students work on Activity 2 page 246)
This displays a poster with pictures and their properties for you to display if necessary while students are doing the activities.
Note: You could get students to create their own wall chart instead.
Geometry taboo (Teacher Resource Sheet 108)
(This game could be used to remind students of the properties of 2-D shapes and help them think of ways to describe them other than their properties. Use it in conjunction with 2-D shapeson page 245.)
This displays some cards for you to print.
Each card has a shape on it and some words that cannot be used to describe the shape.
Divide into paired groups of 2 to 5 people. Two groups play against each other.
The cards are shuffled and placed face down on the table.
One person from a group picks up one of the cards and must try and get their group to guess the shape on the card. They must not use any of the words on the card.
Each group has five minutes to describe as many shapes as possible.
Each time a new card is chosen, a new person from the group does the description. If a student can’t think of any other way to describe the shape without using the words on the card, the card is put on the bottom of the pile.
Example:
A student who got a card might say this to describe it: “There are several kinds of this shape. Some have all equal angles and are called equilateral.”
If the group guesses the shape, they keep the card and go on to the next card if there is time left.
Once the time is up, the other group has their turn.
The group with most cards is the winner.
Gestures or pointing are not allowed.
Finding shapes (Teacher Resource Sheet 109)
(This sheet could be used to introduce Sorting shapes using their properties on page 246.)
This displays photos of shapes within real-life objects and asks students to identify as many of them as possible.
