Number knowledge 9 – Twos, fives and tens multiplication

(You could use this sheet to revise the concept of multiplication as “groups of 2, 5 or 10” prior to the game on page 122 of the Student Resource Book.)

This takes you to two sheets. The first sheet displays rows of fish bowls with groups of 1. 2 or 5 fish in them. The second sheet has bunches of 3 or 5 cherries. Students are asked which facts describe each set of pictures.

 

  • In the first sheet there are six equations that all have the same answer, yet each describes different combinations.
  • You could encourage students to notice that although the commutative property can be used to determine the total number of fish or cherries, the meaning of each equation and the configuration of the groups is different.
  • Students could give examples of when it might be helpful to use the commutative property (for example, the fact 5 × 3 might need to be calculated, but 3 × 5 will probably be more easily recalled).
  • Asking students to draw or model what an equation might look like in ‘real life’ is a useful way of determining how well students are beginning to understand the concept of multiplication.

Number knowledge 10 – Multiplying by 10 and 100

(You could use this sheet alongside the teaching section on page 127 of the Student Resource Book.)

This takes you to a sheet that asks students to work out how many large and small chips are in numbers of bowls containing 10 and 100 chips respectively.

 

  • Use this sheet to discuss with students why digits move to the left when multiplied by 10 and 100 and why zeros are inserted as place holders.
  • Discourage students from saying that when multiplying by 10 a zero is added and when multiplying by 100, two zeros are added as this leads to confusion when multiplying decimal numbers in more advanced levels.
