Making tracks (Teacher resource sheet 93)
(You could use this sheet to discuss the relationship between groups of two, five and ten, prior to Activity 1 on page 143 of the Student Resource Book.)
This takes you to a sheet that asks students to determine how many children made footprints on the sand, based on the number of toes that appear on the footprints.
- Using the students’ own feet (and toes) to model the footprints in the sand might help students to solve these problems. If necessary, include other numbers of toes, for example, 10 toes, 30 toes … to help students recognise the pattern.
- It might be helpful to support students’ problem-solving strategies by recording the facts that have been used in separate lists for multiplication as numbers get larger, and as students’ start working with fives rather than tens.
- Students might use their knowledge of halving and doubling in this activity, which could provide you with a good opportunity to highlight how knowing the ten times tables can help them answer problems involving the five times tables.
