Rich tasks
- These are problem solving open-ended questions that require students to find places in real life where percentages exist and present this along with some calculations. These tasks can be given at the start of a topic and done as the students gain enough knowledge to complete them, inserted into a topic at an appropriate place or given as homework or extension.

1. Food Labels
- You could bring some empty packages into school or ask students to do this. The packages could then be used if you were to set up a shop with sale items.
2. Coaches do the maths
- The supplied data (Printable Master - Coaches do the maths) will enable students to gain confidence in calculating percentages and use them to make comparisons. When they progress to making calculations using their own data they may not be able to perform all the same calculations as some fractions may not have equivalent fractions with denominator 100. They may need to use a calculator to find percentages of some numbers.
- You could refer students to the movie “Moneyball” which is all about winning the major league by choosing players who had best percentage of getting on base.

Getting started (Getting started sheet 5)
This link displays the Getting started on page 98 for use as a class discussion.- The stick
You will need a meter ruler and some post-it-notes (or “Number sticks" that you can buy from Everyeducaid, or decipipes or percentage strips).- Put a post-it-note with 10% at the top side of the 10 cm mark on the ruler. Discuss why 10% is placed here.
(Because 10% is 10 out of 100 and there are 100 cm in a metre rules so 10% must be at 10 cm.) - Give out other post-it-notes with 20%, 30% … 100% and also ones with 1/10, 1/5, 3/10, 2/5, 1/2, 3/5, 7/10, 4/5, 9/10 and 1.
- Ask students to put their post-it-notes in the correct place along the ruler so that you get a line with the percentages along the top and the matching fractions along the bottom.
- Ask questions such as “Why is 30% the same as 3/10?”
- You could have the fractions as 1/10, 2/10, 3/10 etc instead and then ask them to simplify the fractions as a second exercise.
- You could extend this starter to include other percentages such as 25%, and 75%.
- The hundreds square
You will need a (Printable Master - Hundreds square) and a colouring pen. (You could use other decimal place value materials such as decipipes, decimats, number stick or percentage strips). - Colour 10 squares and ask what percentage is coloured (you will need to introduce percentages as “out of 100” first.
Ask what fraction is coloured. - Repeat this for 20%, 25%, 50%, 60%, 75%, 80%.
Teacher notes
- Make sure students understand that a percentage is a way of expressing a fraction with a denominator of 100.
- It is important that students understand the equivalence between percentages and fractions, for example, that 10% and 1/10 are equivalent and describe the same proportion.

- Explores how percentages, fractions and decimals are related and how all three are used to describe the same proportion.

- You could extend this starter by adding other percentage and decimal matchings such as 15% and 0.15 etc.

Percentage dominoes (Teacher resource sheet 16)- This link displays a set of dominoes that you can print.
- This game requires students to match up percentages, decimals and fractions in a game of dominoes.
- Play the game of dominoes in groups.
Teaching ideas
- Make sure students understand how percentages, fractions and decimals all relate and how they can all be used to describe the same proportion in a different way.
- Using materials such as decipipes, number sticks, place value blocks and number lines will all help students to understand percentages better.
Finding percentages of quantities
- Understanding how to find percentages using benchmark percentages of 10% (1/10), 50% (1/2), 1% (1/100).

Teaching ideas
Spider diagram (Teacher resource sheet 17)
This link displays this diagram. You will need to display it in a way that allows you to write on it.
Discuss how easy it is to find 10%, 50% and 1% of $50.
Use spider diagrams to find other percentages of the amount in the middle.
Teacher notes
- Students need to be able to know how to find 1/10, 1/2 and 1/100 of amounts with ease.
- In Activity 3 question 9, you could extend this question by asking students to investigate if they thought the percentages in the pie graph would be the same if they asked their own classmates. Students could investigate to find out and add any missing categories.
- Students could set up a shop in the classroom selling various items with a percentage. They could present the items attractively with a sale tag that will attract customers. (Links into persuasive language.) This could be extended into other areas such as statistics by working out which stalls sell the most and drawing graphs to show this.
